Congratulations!
You’ve been selected for this month’s CSL! (Chuunin Spar Lottery)
Randomized location is sealed within.
Best of luck!

Zaijorou twisted the paper between his fingers, flipping it over to stare at the minor seal on the back, sighing aloud as he did so. He hadn’t ever heard of a so-called ”Chuunin Spar Lottery”, but shrugged since it appeared to be legit, he guessed. While he briefly wondered who his opponent would be, hoping it wouldn’t be some moron like one his old teammates, the Kodogu swiftly applied his chakra to the seal which transported him to the aforementioned randomized location. The place he reappeared was on the outskirts of Akarigakure – a large area with dry, wilting grass, no trees, no water, and surrounded by enormous boulders that encircled the makeshift arena for about a mile in every direction. A solitary figure stood in the middle and waved with a bit of enthusiasm, beckoning him forward with an outstretched hand.

You’re the first to arrive,” the figure, dressed in strange looking gear that was vaguely similar to the ANBU’s, complete with a mask that was solid white with only eyeholes, and spoke in a very unisexual voice; their body didn’t even betray their gender, “Please wait patiently.

Raising a brow, Zaijorou nodded curtly before asking, “And you might be…?

Filo. This month’s referee,” the voice replied before falling silent with hands folding behind their back.

Just as his mouth opened, to ask another question, the referee abruptly spoke up, “Please wait patiently.

Alrighty then, he’d shut his mouth and stand there, feeling awkward in the unspoken tension obviously spewing from his aura.

Zau blinked in confusion at the note. Chuunin Spar Lottery? How odd. He had never heard of such a thing, but then, he supposed he wouldn't know every detail about the village's practices, since he'd spent so much time away. Still, it seemed odd to have a mandated spar between two who may very well not be equal in strength to each other. In fact, Zau was fairly certain he was about on the level of a Jounin; a fight against another Chuunin other than Vivian might simply be unfair.

He shrugged. He would just have to be careful.

~~~
When Zau got to the predetermined arena, he looked back and forth between the two present; his opponent was most likely the one who wasn't wearing an ANBU uniform. As he approached, he bowed lightly to his probable opponent. He was taller than Zau, but most were; Zau had long ago given up on being as tall as his fellow ninja.
"So...what's this?" Zau smiled warmly at those around him, briefly noting that he did not know his opponent. Not an Uchiha, then, and probably not a Kemuri.
Zau was armed as typical; his blunted sword was suspended from his left hip, while his censer had its chain wrapped around his torso diagonally and coiled around his left arm. It was currently unlit, but Zau could fix that fairly easily if he needed to. Though he had access to more weapons via his seals, that was all Zau carried with him into battle.
"I'm Zau Uchiha. Nice to meet you."
When Zau appeared, taking his position between the significantly taller individuals before him, Filo presented both of his hands before suddenly disappearing and reappearing from the furthest Eastern vicinity of the arena – all taking place just as soon as Zau asked his question about what this was all about. Filo remained silent while Zau introduced himself to his opponent, observing their immediate interactions with resilience, staring blankly from behind the unmarked mask of white.
Zaijorou warmly smiled back, appreciating the gesture with a kindness as he returned the bow with one of his own, almost as if he were trying to show his submission to a Clan far greater than his own – or rather, a Clan with more renown as his own was kept quiet and slightly underhanded in their attempts to be ”the man behind the curtain”, as his mother always told him. An Uchiha was someone he know not fear from, having encountered quite a few in his day, but they were a bunch that mindfucked everyone they met. Hopefully, Zau was not the ordinary type and an honest opponent but such things were minor in these situations as they were to show their prowess, not become friends.
Nice to meet you, Zau-san,” he nodded as he recovered from his bow, “I’m Zaijorou Kodogu.
The smile quickly melted away as he leaned in with a skeptical squint of his saddened eyes, “Say, you ever heard of this --- ” But before he could continue, Filo interrupted him with the androgenous voice that could make an Akuma quiver.
First to draw blood, no matter how minute, wins. As the second to arrive, the Uchiha has offense and the Kodogu has defense – BEGIN!
Zaijorou’s eyes widened as he took a single step backwards, awaiting his opponent’s first action.
Zau frowned as the judge disappeared and explained the "rules". First blood? Damn.
Though he had been given the first move, Zau hesitated and shouted to the referee. "When you say first blood, are you being literal? As in, the red stuff has to actually come out?"
The ref meekly shook his head-blood wasn't literal here. Zau smiled and crossed his fingers in front of him. "Good thing-I was nearly at a bit of a disadvantage. Of all my jutsu, only one actually cuts, and I wouldn't feel right using that one during a friendly spar. If blood isn't literal though, I suppose it's a moot point. Kage Bunshin no Jutsu!"
A pair of clones sprung to life near Zau. One of the clones dashed forward, unwinding the chain around its arm and swinging the heavy metal censer with abandon. It wasn't abnormally heavy the way some ninja weapons were, but it was solid metal-a solid strike would hurt like hell.
In the meantime, Zau stood back and stared daggers at his opponent, waiting for Zaijorou to make the mistake of looking into Zau's eyes, which were now bright crimson, glowing, and spinning rapidly as Zau's Sharingan activated. If he caught Zaijorou's eye, Zau would launch a low-level Genjutsu: Sharingan at him. Zau didn't bother layering effects on top of one another; rather, he simply caused the clone currently attacking to be displaced in Zaijorou's vision. If Zaijorou fell for the illusion, the clone would appear to be several feet to the left of where it truly was, making it difficult to adequately dodge the attack of its makeshift flail, which the clone had sent in a long horizontal arc from Zaijorou's left. Combined with the illusion, the flail would potentially hit before Zaijorou's perception of it reached his body.
The second clone, in contrast to the first two, merely sat down and crossed its legs. It began absorbing Nature Energy from its surroundings. Zau couldn't hold onto quite as much Sage Chakra as he would have liked, but it should be enough to give him an edge, even so.
Of course, the original would receive none of that chakra until the absorbing clone dispersed-but it was just a matter of time.
Listening to the quick conversation between Zau and Filo, Zaijorou breathed a sigh of relief – though he wasn’t entirely a pacifist, he preferred to exhaust opponents rather than bombarding them with ill-thought out, half-assed jutsu that maimed and slaughtered. With Zau’s first offensive measure, the Kodogu’s eyes followed the first of the Bunshin – it should be mentioned that he absolutely loathes clones – and as he did, he took a brief glance at the Uchiha’s feet, ensuring that the original wasn’t going anywhere any time soon. He made sure not to look at Zau’s eyes because, well, it was obvious that you weren’t supposed to look at an Uchiha’s eyes unless you wanted to be mind-raped and kill yourself. Like most things, it was entirely too obvious.
As the first clone swung wildly with its weapon, Zaijorou’s entire left side of his body transformed into liquefied metal, donning a color of brilliant silver, which allowed the strike to slip through without physically bringing him any harm. Still, he leapt over to put more distance between the clone and himself, attempting to stray from the barrage of swings the clone continued to produce but it was then that he noticed the other clone, sitting with crossed legs and meditating. ”This guy’s a Sage too?!” he thought to himself, biting down on his lip as he moved with constant light jumps before realizing that he had to rid the playing field of the clones.
Abruptly stopping, Zaijorou forced his palms to the ground, saturating the earth with a flood of his chakra, and within seconds, he unleashed Secret Art: Metal Rising – several black spikes emerged from the soil, ripping apart the wilted grass as they towered around him in an omni-directional circle of only 300 feet – his goal being to stop the meditating clone as well as the clone consistently attacking him. His left side remained glowing with silver while he glanced up to see if the original had been skewered or somehow managed to get out of the way.
He really hated clones, enough to immediately use an S rank.
Of course, Zau noticed that his opponent was avoiding his eyes-as an Uchiha, he was used to this sort of thing. Oh well; genjutsu wasn't his strong suit anyways. More important than the fact that he was avoiding Zau's eyes, however, was the fact that he could avoid physical strikes as well. Huh. That...is interesting. Reminds me of that girl in the Chuunin Exams, but...is that mercury?
Zau kept watching as his opponent hopped backwards, and saw the chakra flowing into the earth clearly. It was unlike anything he'd ever seen-he could tell it had both Earth and Fire in it, but it definitely was not Lava Release. Regardless of what it was, however, it didn't take a genius to figure out that if one's opponent sent a wave of chakra through the earth, one should get off of the ground.
Zau used Chouyaku [Leap] to lift his body high over the ground, just as said earth erupted with hundreds of metal spikes. Zau didn't need to see his clones to know they hadn't survived that; neither were using Sharingan, so neither had the advance warning Zau did. In the case of the absorbing clone, it was even more obvious; it couldn't move. All that beside, a somewhat more obvious sign of their demise had taken effect; Zau felt his chakra return, to include the Sage Chakra gathered by his clone. It wasn't much; the clone barely had any time to absorb anything at all before it was destroyed. Still, it WAS Sage Mode-and that wasn't anything to laugh at.
Dark brown markings formed around Zau's eyes, extending all the way back to his hairline along his temples, and curving to a point down the side of his nose. His eyes widened and turned yellow, though their tomoe remained. In addition, his nose and forearms turned yellow and hardened, and his nails turned black and lengthened, akin to talons. Lastly, his body began smoking, as if a smoldering flame lay just beneath the surface.
As the newly transformed Zau fell back to earth, he twisted his body around, slipping down one of the spikes. His feet pressed against the spike, while his rough-textured hand held fast to its tip, holding Zau in place from perhaps the most precarious perch one could imagine. Zau smiled as he considered that particular alteration-it wasn't pretty, by any means, but the textured skin did wonders for his grip.
Zau forced the smile from his face again and surveyed his surroundings; there were massive spikes everywhere. Movement would be difficult, to say the least, if these spikes stuck around. In all likelihood, they were as permanent as the modifications created by earth and wood techniques.
Zau continued scanning, ensuring he didn't lose track of his opponent's chakra. Very few opponents would alter the terrain in such a way if they weren't able to fight in spite of it. Zau wrapped his arm around the spike, freeing his arms in order to perform a series of handseals. He would hold off on releasing the jutsu, however-not til he had a clearer idea of what his opponent was planning.
Watching Zau transform, after having completely avoided being impaled, Zaijorou smiled widely while he slipped his hands onto his hips, mumbling unto himself, “Truly magnificent.” He could appreciate the majesty of transformation, finding the awe-inspiring markings alter Zau’s form, but he didn’t have telescopic vision like the Hyuuga and so, he figured he needed to get a bit closer in order to see the Uchiha’s new appearance as well as the representation of his Sage Mode’s animal. From the distance, it appeared reptilian or maybe amphibious, or both, but he wasn’t entirely sure, so, once Zau safely clung to a spike, Zaijorou made his next move.
The Kodogu practically reappeared from within the particular spike that Zau was wrapped around so fast that perhaps even his Sharingan wouldn’t be able to keep up. Then again, he didn’t know how good the guy’s eyesight was or if that even mattered. Regardless, once he emerged from the spike, his right arm stretched forward from behind Zau and instantly became a mass of razor-sharp steel, almost like a giant serrated knife but with far more bits of pointed edges, and made an attempt to strike the opponent. Of course, he expected Zau to move on to the next spike or even further away from him, however, it wouldn’t matter which way he went or how fast he tried to avoid the makeshift blade attempting to slice him open.
What’s your Sage animal?” Zaijorou would call out with genuine curiosity, “And sorry about the stabby bit I got going on. Not really sure how else to win, yano?
Zau saw the flash of chakra within the spike he held fast to and knew that he couldn't possibly dodge that move with his own body's capabilities. The blade would find its way into Zau's body, apparently skewering the Uchiha-until his body vanished, replaced by a burst of smoke and a large clump of earth, dislodged by the metal spikes that burst from the ground as he employed his Kawarimi no Jutsu [Body Replacement Technique].
Zau was now suspended from another spike, roughly twenty feet away-but he knew better now than to stay there. He leaped up high, creating another Kage Bunshin [Shadow Clone] in midair, who grabbed Zau by his ankles and began spinning rapidly in midair. The clone launched Zau through the air, who landed gracefully outside the ring of spikes, despite the massive throw that got him there.
The clone fell back into the spikes, returning its chakra to Zau as it was impaled.
Zau brushed his clothes off, as the spikes had cast quite a bit of dust into the air, and looked back out towards his opponent. "Birds. This, specifically, is called the Phoenix Sage, but I'm afraid it's not quite...there yet. Supposedly, when I perfect it, I'll look more like myself and have flames all over. This works for now though."
Zau knelt down and stretched one leg out to the side, then stretched the other. "Oh, don't worry about all that. Like I said, I don't have many options either. Though, given your ability to liquefy, I think I might be able to actually use my jutsu after all."
Zau placed his hands in the cross seal again, and this time created three Kage Bunshin. Each was created in Sage Mode, since it split Zau's chakra evenly. They also each appeared to be using Sharingan, though in truth, only the original was actually using it-the rest were only keeping the appearance up. Two of Zau's clones ran in opposite directions, away from the field of spikes, towards the edge of the arena. Zau and his remaining clone remained on the edge of the spikes, again watching and waiting.
Once his extra clones made it to their destinations, they would each sit down and cross their legs, both now absorbing Sage Chakra.
Zaijorou knelt on the pointed top of the spike that Zau had managed to move from but instead of bothering to play chase anymore, he watched as his opponent was thrown outside of the steel death trap and landed safely outside the radius. He listened to him as he explained that his Sage Animal was no lizard or frog, but instead, birds. Narrowing his eyes, the Kodogu wasn’t exactly sure what kind of birds Zau was mingling with but he felt as if he needed to delve no further into that folder, lest he be schooled on mutant birds… like ostriches. He shuddered at the thought.
The mention of a jutsu perked his interest – what kind of jutsu was so dangerous that Zau wouldn’t use it but would use it because he was capable of liquefying? Skepticism, at its finest, the look on Zaijorou’s face was misshapen with serious skepticism. Regardless, he watched as more clones were made; all of which were now lit up with Sage Mode, and he couldn’t help but to sigh while rubbing his forehead. He was beginning to lose his patience with all these clones. Fine. This is the way ol’ boy wanted to play, then he would just have to go along. Luckily for him, Zaijorou liked practicing which made the utilization of his favorite jutsus easier to use, especially during times such as this.
Look, man,” he groaned aloud, “I’m just not feelin’ the clones. They make me nervous and I’m not quite as, I dunno, pleasant when I get nervous? Maybe that’s not exactly how I want to say that, but you get the gist. Also, a Phoenix Sage is pretty awesome – kudos on that!
And so, Zaijorou jumped across the spikes to land safely somewhere in between one direction of a running clone and the other. He didn’t much care about the original nor the clone next to him, not right now, anyways. It was apparent that his normal speed was greater than Zau’s and it didn’t take much time for him to get close enough to the first clone he aimed to kill. Feeding his chakra into the earth, he used Secret Art: Metal Rising again to attempt to dispel the clone then immediately passed through the spikes to exit where he sought after the second clone – which wasn’t too hard to do considering they were in a huge circle – so once he got close enough, he repeated the process. Spamming three S ranks was beginning to take its toll and he felt his body becoming a bit worn but trekked on, heading back through the original set of spikes to find the original and the last clone. Clones made things difficult and well, Zaijorou just didn’t like things being difficult.
Once he made his way back to Zau, or rather, where he chilled out behind a spike a few feet away where he could watch like some sort of stalker, and observed the two, not ready to yet make another offensive strike. Defense was his forte, not this bullshittery.
Zau shifted his head to the side the way one might expect a dog to do when it became apparent that Zaijorou was intent to take out his clones above all else. The first clone hadn't managed to get any new chakra before it was destroyed, but the second one had; Zau felt the rush of chakra as it returned to him. "Why the dislike for clones though? It's just a copy. Honestly, your own techniques are far more troublesome, in my opinion."
Zau shrugged and started walking backwards, careful not to take his eyes off of his opponent, as his remaining clone sat down and began absorbing Sage Chakra as well. Zau could play this game for a bit longer if he needed, but he would need to go on the offense soon; despite his earlier assertion that blood not being literal meaning he WASN'T at a disadvantage, the truth of the matter was that, given the rules of this particular encounter and the opponent he had chanced to get, Zau was very notably the less favored party. If he kept playing defense, he would eventually take a hit, especially considering how fast his opponent was. Coupled with the fact that he was facing an opponent that couldn't be easily damaged, it was clear that Zau needed an equalizer.
Once he had a fair amount of distance between himself and his opponent-enough that Zau was fairly sure he'd be able to react if needed-he held out one of his hands. A sphere of spinning chakra quickly grew to full size above his palm-but as quickly as it appeared, it shifted again, elongating into a sword-like shape. Once it reached its full length, the individual "strands" of chakra seemed to thin-at least to Zau's eyes. He wasn't sure if Zaijorou would note that detail. What Zaijorou WOULD notice, likely, was the silver sheen the technique now produced, as opposed to the ordinary blue of Rasengan.
"This is that jutsu I was talking about. It's called Rasengatana-specifically, Fuuton: Rasengatana. Please, don't miss a shift to your liquid state if this hits you. I've killed Akuma with this; the blade doesn't stop."
In demonstration, Zau casually flicked his sword through the ground at his feet. There was virtually no resistance as his blade gouged a section out of the earth, several inches into the ground. Had there been rocks in there, Zau wouldn't have noticed; this technique, in this form, could cut through almost anything; Zau had yet to find something it COULDN'T cut, to be perfectly honest. Against an ordinary foe, Zau was loathe to use this jutsu; the rotation of the chakra within the blade gave it a rather intense gyroscopic effect, which, if Zau wasn't being careful, could easily cause him to swing the blade a few inches too far. It wasn't that the jutsu created openings that Zau was afraid of; rather, it was that it made it too easy to accidentally kill-an overswing could easily result in a beheading, when all that was intended was a deterrent. Zau was very much against the needless killing of another human. Buuuuuut...if his opponent could turn to liquid if he got hit, well, that was ideal-Zau could truly let loose against such a foe without guilt.
Zau unwound his censer from around his arm and wrapped the chain around his hand. He knelt down, presenting a sidelong profile to his opponent. The censer swayed, suspended from his left hand, while his right was held near his waist, the blade of Rasengatana pointing in a "5 o'clock" direction relative to the censer's "12 o'clock" position. This fight was still very much in its infancy.
Peeking out from his not-so-well-hidden hiding place, Zaijorou kept the distance between them but revealed himself while propping up against one of the metal spikes, listening to Zau ask questions about his dislike of clones as well as watching the singular clone begin to meditate. He paused for a split second, only to answer rather curtly, “Clones make things difficult, especially Kage Bunshin.” In a momentary drift back to his childhood, his free hand slid down his side onto his lower back where the atypical mesh of flesh and metal protruded in an ugly fashion, resulting in a scar of hideous proportion. Let’s just say he was the unwilling participant of a back-alley appendectomy. He said nothing else as his hand was removed and hung aimlessly by his side while Zau performed a sequence of minor events, leading the revelation of a pretty decent sword that vibrated with chakra, shined with gossamer striations, and glowed with prowess. A shot of excitement refueled his thrill of this spar upon witnessing the manifestation of such a glory incarnate and truly, he was smitten with jealousy of his opponent.
"This is that jutsu I was talking about. It's called Rasengatana-specifically, Fuuton: Rasengatana. Please, don't miss a shift to your liquid state if this hits you. I've killed Akuma with this; the blade doesn't stop."
The words reverberated in his mind, making the danger become all too real, and though he’d never intentionally miss a shift, it’d still be something he’d consider just out of plain curiosity. The Kodogu’s bodies were not of normal composition and the further one traveled into their bloodline, the more their bodies became impregnable fortresses of steel. Still, the morbid curiosity remained as he moved even closer with doe eyes, never blinking as he observed the demonstration with unspoken reels of mental deconstruction until finally, and for the first time, his eyes met Zau’s – however brief a second it was.
I’m in awe, Zau-san,” he said in a squeaky voice, “You have finally decided to use offensive techniques and this one, shoo weeee, is a nice one.
Followed by an even quicker clap of his hands, Zaijorou smiled just as his right arm extended forward into a pointed spear, long enough to cover the distance between himself and the meditating clone who most certainly wouldn’t see the ambush of a metal pole to the face, and for all intents and purposes, intended to impale said clone right through the temporal lobe – to be fair, he’d be happy with any place, just as long as the clone died.
This is why I say clones make things difficult; personally, I don’t murder or execute out of enjoyment and truthfully, I carry each death with me on a daily basis. Clones can make you believe you’re killing someone, especially the Kage Bunshin since they are, in fact, a shared entity of their creators. Death should be a peaceful exit, not a terrifying existence. A friendly spar between two people should be just that – a friendly spar between two people, not twenty of their offspring and one opponent. It makes things difficult, you understand?” he finished off his sentiment with a lazy shrug, giving Zau a little insight to how he felt about life.
With his small monologue complete, Zaijorou abruptly sank into one of the nearby spikes, awaiting the next move.
Zau's shoulders surged up slightly as the clone was destroyed, again returning its chakra to Zau-and not a moment too soon; he had almost run out of Sage Chakra. Had he run out-well, he'd still be in good shape, but he would have lost Sage Mode, and that simply would not do.
"I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree on the issue of clones. Yes, a clone can create the illusion of having killed a target; but in your case, you've yet to strike a clone you didn't know was a clone before you attacked it. And from the perspective of the one making the clones, I find it has the opposite effect you assume with regards to death; it's never terrifying, and in fact, 'dying' so often has given me a perspective on death I think everyone should have. Death can come at any moment, and only happens once, but I'm fortunate-I have died thousands of times, in hundreds of different ways. Thanks to my clones, death can never terrify me again."
His opponent was gone, however-sank into the metal spikes. Zau couldn't fight him while he was hiding away in those; not only could he have no idea where to target, but the odds of actually hitting his opponent while he was inside a spike was slim to none. Even if Zau managed to pick the right spike to attack, his opponent would be gone before the sword actually connected.
"Plus, as long as you're in those spikes, I can't reasonably attack you. So, my only recourse is to use clones to extend my Sage Mode and to give myself the best chance of finding an opening."
Zau created the clone seal again-somewhat complicated, since he had a sword in his hand, but it was doable, regardless. Zau created a pair of clones, both of whom retreated back behind Zau as quickly as they could. They both sat down and began their meditations.
This time would be different, however-Zau wasn't so willing to let these clones bite the dust so quickly. Zau reassumed his stance, waiting for the expected attack.
Zaijorou emerged from the same spike he’d melded with previously, taking on a kneeling stance on top of said spike. He looked down at Zau and frowned incessantly, noticing the two new clones that were, once again, meditating which was doing only one thing for his opponent – keeping his Sage Mode active. Of course, he could continue to kill them, but eventually, he’d exhaust his chakra pool and for no really good reason other than his apparent hatred. Zaijorou couldn’t help but to be envious of his opponent – Zau had lived and died thousands of times and had no true fear of dying because of his clones while Zaijorou understood the terror of death, the wretched feeling of no longer being able to breathe freely, but he also understood that no moment should ever be taken for granted which was something Zau had forgotten in his quest for immortality.
For a second, the Kodogu desired to explain that Zau, like himself, was mortal and one day, he’d go against someone that would remind him of his mortality but that wasn’t his place. Relying on a split of chakra to survive only made Zau weak – smart, but weak – and today wouldn’t be a day for ugly reminders of one’s past, much like the physical nostalgia on his own back. Instead of killing the clones, Zaijorou allowed them to meditate and fuel Zau’s Sage Mode but as he gazed upon the three at the base, he thought about what his opponent had said.
”… but in your case, you've yet to strike a clone you didn't know was a clone before you attacked it. “
That’s because he always paid attention; as long as it was plausible for him to see a clone being made or if the other had revealed themselves, he always took out a clone before an original. He’d never kill an original unless absolutely necessary. Had Zau not of shown him the chakra manifestation, he would have attempted to take out both the original and his clone, because he wouldn’t have been privy to which was which. Alas, his thoughts were cleared from his mind and he decided to make things far more interesting – seeing that there was a reason for Zau to be so determined to have Sage chakra.
From his position, Zaijorou waved eclectically towards Zau as he completely melted into a pool of silver liquid, dripping down the sides of the spike to reunite at the base where he circled himself and recoiled into a snake-like entity, constantly spiraling around the spike in wait.
The disapproval was clearly plastered across his opponent's face, but Zau didn't care too much-his clones finally were able to gather the chakra Zau needed. Zau allowed one of the clones to disperse, but kept the other active and continuing to absorb chakra. Zau felt the surge of chakra flow through his body again-every time, a new ecstasy-and with that new rush of chakra, Zau had enough to pull it off. Once again, his hands met each other, Zau being extra careful around the blade. When the seals completed, Zau squeezed his left hand, pressing his claws into the flesh. Once he felt warm blood welling beneath his talon-like fingers, Zau slammed his palm onto the ground, creating a large burst of smoke.
When the smoke cleared, Zau was again holding the chain of his censer, and again holding his sword behind him. Zau was knelt close to the ground, his rear resting upon his heels as he held a squat over the ground. Perched atop him was a large eagle-Sasaki, Zau's personal summoning.
"Zau. I see you've gotten yourself into a bit of a situation."
Zau grinned at the remark; Sasaki was one of Zau's best friends, despite the species barrier. "Not that much of one. It's a friendly spar-but this guy can handle damage. Don't hold back."
Observing Sasaki's fierce face, one could be forgiven for forgetting that birds can't actually smile-such was the enthusiasm Sasaki suddenly had for this fight. "That's some of the best news I've heard in a while."
Sasaki spread his wings-a massive 8 foot wingspan, briefly creating the illusion that Zau had become something angelic-and lifted himself powerfully off of his summoner's back with one mighty beat of his wings. Sasaki climbed higher into the sky and gained speed, turning a complete circle before pulling his body upright and slamming his wings ahead, releasing a tremendous blast of wind from his Daikamaitachi no Jutsu [Great Sickle Weasel Technique]. This technique was capable of leveling entire swaths of forest, slicing through tree trunks wider than a person was tall. Maybe it couldn't cut all the way through the spikes-but it could cut at least partially through EVERY spike at once, finally presenting an attack capable of striking at a wider area.
Zau wasn't going to let Sasaki take on the entire effort, however-Zau performed a series of handseals-fewer than normal, due to his training-and launched his Kasumi Enbu no Jutsu [Mist Blaze Dance Technique] straight up, directly in the path of Sasaki's blast. The wind carried the mist and spread it throughout the entire field of spikes. It would have hovered threateningly in the area after that-except that Sasaki's jutsu was cutting across the spikes, potentially cutting the thinner parts entirely, which would in turn launch the pieces about the field of spikes, causing hundreds of collisions. Oh yes-there were sparks.
And a spark was all it took. The spark would ignite the mist, causing a massive explosion as the mist became a sea of flame.
Zau stood in front of his clone, deftly using his sword to knock aside any stray pieces of debris that threatened him or the clone; it wouldn't do for his own jutsu to end up hurting him.
Well, shit.
‘twas Zaijorou’s final thought as the wind gushed and blew apart his liquid form; sending pieces of him to scatter, splashing against broken spikes that were gashed here and there, some were even dismantled completely, leaving behind jagged stumps of what once were towering overhead. It was most certainly a surprise, one he found completely enthralling, but now, he knew where Zau’s power against him rested – with a summon. Like clones, summons were difficult, useful and far more potent, but dedicating oneself to re-summoning presented quite the situation for anyone, especially if one’s opponent was becoming a tiny bit more lustful for combat. The mist did much of nothing to Zaijorou, even when it was ignited, causing the steel to refuse with other pieces, most of which were scattered about the field from the wind’s torrent but fortunately, mercury was hardly flammable and it caused the Kodogu more irritation than damage as he quickly pieced himself together to reform in the middle of his spike forest, as it had been dubbed.
That’s what I’m talkin’ about, Zau-san!” he roared from his place, grinning wildly as he gazed across his singed field of battered metallic ruin, “Incredulous predicament, I dare say!
No longer did he have the vantage point overhead which brought about a smidge of sadness but the fun of this was being able to recreate, rebuild, and return the favor his opponent had managed to fulfill. So, things were only getting more exciting for the Kodogu as he bent down, resending the wave of Koton chakra into the earth where more steel spikes of black re-emerged from the soil, splitting apart some of the old pieces while also connecting some with others, producing a makeshift labyrinth of metal and razor-sharp edges nobody would dare enter. Melding with a spike, Zaijorou appeared on the top of one of the spikes where he could see where everything was at – the summon flew around, Zau seemed pleased with himself, and a solitary clone remain meditating for the moment. He wondered if Zau ever let his hair down or let loose, perhaps this was his way of doing just that, but meh, it wasn’t anything he couldn’t handle, not for now anyways.
And so, from his left arm, Zaijorou’s body creaked as it twisted and reshaped into that of a solid metal silver bow, complete with a tight string and crescent shape that mirrored the sun’s rays, making it nearly impossible for anyone to look directly at him. By using Flash-Forge, a slew of ten mirrored arrows appeared in his opposite hand (lowkey, totally felt like Apollo) and he rapidly drew back one of them while the others rested under his arm. The gleaming arrow was fired towards the meditating clone just as another was loaded and released at the summon, along with three more in succession, aiming for areas the bird might fly into, just in case his first attempt was futile, or the second, so on and so forth. Until he knew of his success or failure, he waited patiently upon his own perch.
As his opponent unleashed an arrow, Zau waited til the last moment before his arm snapped up, engaging in a perfectly executed Rantou Tawami [Melee Deflection]. His Sharingan allowed him to track the arrow better than a normal eye could have. Additionally, while an ordinary sword might have deflected the arrow; Zau's sword demolished it, reducing the projectile to shards. When it came to defending against projectiles, Zau was confident that he was one of the best around.
And yet, Zau's clone would disperse anyways-it had reached very close to the limit of what Zau's body could actually hold. Zau felt his chakra replenish once again, now very close to the brim. Zau stood resolute against the steel forest, still exercising caution. From where he stood, he still had a pretty massive advantage. He'd proven again and again that he could handle the most dangerous techniques Zaijorou had-his only disadvantage was simply that Zaijorou couldn't be easily approached-but as the fight dragged on, that disadvantage would fade. Caution was a slow burn, as fighting styles went, but a fire that burned for days could destroy more than one that went out with a flash.
As for Sasaki, he was more than used to dealing with opponents taking potshots at him. As he flew, he opened his beak and unleashed Kyoudaina Gouon [Mighty Roar] (though admittedly, his was more like a mighty screech, since eagles could not exactly "roar"). The soundwave, and, since Sasaki was a Fuuton user, the wind, would knock aside the projectiles. Zaijorou would have to deal with a sound blast coupled with concussive-it occurred to Zau, as he observed the sound wave striking Zaijorou (at least, Zau's RPer assumed Zaijorou couldn't dodge at the speed of sound) that sound may well be one of the few offenses that could actually bother Zaijorou. Not that this was meant to be much of an offense-Sasaki was literally only defending himself with the easiest option. The fact that it ALSO functioned as an attack was a happy coincidence.
In the meantime, Zau unsealed a pair of Shuriken using his Raikou Kenka [Lightning Flash Blade Creation] technique and, with the same hand, threw both of the shuriken-initially, both at odd angles that clearly could never have struck Zaijorou. But, due to Zau's skill with Shuriken Hazumi [Shuriken Ricochet], those shuriken would collide with and ricochet off of the metal spikes around Zaijorou-both multiple times, at that-before reaching their ultimate target, Zaijorou himself. Zau doubted the attack would cause much damage, but that wasn't really the point. Zau felt his pulse quicken as he finally felt the tide of battle turning. Caution was smart, but he couldn't pretend a real fight wasn't more exciting.
The sound blast did just as it was supposed to, and perhaps a bit more, Zaijorou had anchored himself – fusing his lower body into the metal spike – and took the damage produced by the flying summon. His left eardrum busted as bright red liquid trickled from the left side of his face but nothing short of a sheepish smile remained on his lackluster façade. There was only Zau and his summon now, nothing more, and once the barrage of ricocheting shuriken made their way towards Zaijorou, their speed slowed significantly as they reached their target, and with a quick outreach, he felt the sharp edges dig into the palm of the hand that caught them, bringing forth a silver substance that dripped onto the spike he remained entangled with. However, his smile remained but it should be noted that it wasn’t a creepy or psychotic smile; no, it was more along the lines of genuine happiness and excitement. This spar would have continued for quite some time had Zaijorou of killed the two clones earlier but he’d chosen not to and now, he had far bigger threats to deal with.
Dropping the arrows as well as the shuriken to the earth below, the Kodogu defused himself and fell to the ground with a light thud then began heading straight for his opponent. It wasn’t a dash or even a jog, just a mediocre brisk walk until he was nearly face to face with Zau but remained next to a spike that separated him from the metal forest behind.
We all make decisions based on survival,” he began, glancing at the spike as his hand graced the sleek material, “I assume you’ve never lost, or if you have, it was against someone that employed the same fighting style or something similar, right? That doesn’t matter, really. What matters is that your conservation is what will win, I’ve already gathered that I won’t be the victor here as errors were made on my behalf. But that’s the fun of a spar, ne?
Smiling, even with his eyes, Zaijorou produced a bit of chakra that decimated the spike he was currently touching, rusting it to the point that it began to shatter into millions of tiny pieces that crumbled like sand in his hand. His arm that had been fashioned into a bow distorted back into the original arm it had once been and he held his hand out for Zau to take – a gesture of kindness as well as assumed forfeiture.
Consider this more of a learning curve for myself, my curiosity, and perhaps next time, I’ll draw blood first,” he nodded with a soft chuckle.
Zau smiled and deactivated his Rasengatana. He also allowed his Sage Mode to fall apart. He took his opponent's hand and shook it warmly.
"It was a good fight. My recommendation to you is to take it slower. With your abilities, you can outlast anyone when it comes to actual damage; it's just chakra that hurts you. If you can cut back on how much chakra you use, you could be unbeatable."
In truth, he was glad the fight ended when it did. He could outlast Zaijorou when it came to chakra, but if Zaijorou had ever taken the fight to an outright brawl, Zau wasn't sure his abilities could have handled Zaijorou's; at least, not well enough to ensure first blood.
