Soon after the arena was cleared out (a complicated task, considering the fact that the final fight had literally altered the landscape of the arena), the finals could begin. The space of the arena was remarkably the same as before any fighting had taken place here today-as a reminder in case anyone had forgotten, it was modeled to resemble a forest clearing. There was a stream of water in one quadrant, trees along the edge of the arena, surrounding the clearing in the middle; there were several large rocks, creating a varied landscape, and despite the damage caused the previous rounds, no evidence at all of any fighting having been done. Raised high above the arena were spectator stands.

The final match of the Chuunin Exams were between Zau and Vivian. They were led to opposite ends of the arena, when the mechanical man who met them at the summit would dive down between them. They would have no rules re-explained, though they hadn't changed.

QUOTE
Reminder of rules:

"The final round of the Chuunin Exams, per tradition, is a tournament. The rules are rather simple. You fight til someone is unconscious, dead, or surrenders. If I believe victory is inevitable, I will intervene as I see fit to avoid further loss of life.

There is a team of medics standing by. Should you lose, you will receive immediate medical attention. Should you win, your chakra will be restored to its usual maximum and minimal first aid will be applied as necessary. You will not receive full medical treatment between fights, so pace yourselves.

Losing here does not negate the possibility of promotion, nor does winning guarantee it.
Your performance will be evaluated by your Kage, who will handle promotions as he or she sees fit. Your goal here is to show your skills and impress your Kage; anything beyond that is on you.
"

After he was satisfied with the fighters being in position, he would wave his arm down towards the ground and leap up out of the arena, leaving the contestants to their business.

OOC Rules

- This is the last fight. YAAAAAAAAS!!! Both fighters have seen every fight the other has been in, so they know everything the other has done. (Not that it really matters all that much, since Zau and Vivian know the other's fighting styles like the back of their hands)

- Failure to post for 3 days on the part of either fighter will result in the attacks launched against said player in the last round successfully landing. If those successful hits would logically cause death, the NPCer will try their best to weasel you out of dying, but you will lose the match. If you're skipped twice, regardless of what those injuries or not-injuries would do to your body, your surrender will be NPC'd and you will lose the match. These skips do not need to be sequential; if you're skipped on the first round and again on the 15th, you're out. No one will be reminded.

- If a winner has not been decided by then, this match will end on the 28th. A winner will be determined won based on performance in the fight. The decisions made in this match on all matters, including the victor, is final.

Rewards

All rewards accumulate-if you get knocked out in the final round, for example, you get all rewards except for the Champion Reward. Rewards will be given after your character is out of the exams, either by winning it all or being eliminated.

Quarterfinalist Reward - 2000 Ryu
Semifinalist Reward - 3000 Ryu
Finalist Reward - 1 Extra Restricted Jutsu (If you're fighting here, you get this and everything prior)
Champion Reward - You'll find out

Zau waited for the match to start and immediately threw his hands together into the clone seal. He didn't bother to activate his Sharingan, however-he expected that it was about to be useless anyways. He created nine Kage Bunshin, each of which threw a kunai as soon as they were created-not at Vivian, but where Zau judged the clones she would inevitably create would come into existence. Typically, she made two-so Zau would focus the projectiles at the two most likely creation spots for her clones, to her immediate left and right. Two of Zau's clones would then throw a shuriken at Vivian's main body-or, if the mist had formed by now as Zau suspected it would have, where he believed her body to still be.

Zau, for his part, had a different idea in mind-but for that one, he would wait til he knew for sure that Vivian was creating the mist, rather than guessing that she probably would be doing so. The main body, however, wouldn't be doing anything for now, other than waiting for Vivian's actions.

Zau didn't see a reason to talk-he knew how Vivian would be fighting, he knew that she knew how he would be fighting-it was a matter then, of beating her to the punch and somehow finding a way to surprise her.

Easier said than done, he guessed.

Whale. Looks like it was time for the least exciting match of the century, and it just had to be the finals. If people wanted to see the clone wars they could go and rent that shit in their own free time. Ah well. Going into the final fight Vivian knew Zau would have had the opportunity to see her fight much as she had seen him fight. She only wished his fights didn't end in all of 5 seconds every time to even the playing field just a little, you know?

Regardless as she entered the arena is was obvious from the get-go that Zau wasn't going to be playing around. She was originally going to suggest that perhaps they should limit their clone usage to only a few at a time but clearly the time for talking was over before it had even begun. Thankfully for her, her own ability to work with clones still surpassed Zau's for now. As soon as it was obvious that he was making clones without so much as saying a word to her she simply popped her own into existence, not needing that split second to form any sort of seal.

From there, well it was pretty easy to avoid the incoming projectiles. They were at opposite ends of the arena after all, and the difference in raw ability only compounded that. It should be noted that not knowing how many clones Zau was going to make Vivian simply made half the maximum number she could field knowing they could always split again to increase their number if they needed to. As such she also had 9 clones out.

For now at least Vivian didn't bother with making any mist, instead taking a perhaps unconventional route given how she had won her last two matches. Dodging and weaving through the incoming projectiles the first wave of clones rushed forwards to the mob of Zau clones. The real Vivian stayed behind where she had started, although for Zau whether it was the real or the fake one would be a 50/50. She had hidden herself among her clones in his presence multiple times now after all so this would be a bit of an amusing mind game.

Once the clones were close enough they would begin to engage Zau's clones in cqc, using Hokuto no Yaban to both close the distance and assist them in the fight to come. The Vivian that stayed behind would simply stand there with her arms folded observing the ongoing scene but ready to react if the need arose.

As Vivian's clones charged forward, the two clones nearest Zau launched a pair of Kemuridan [Smoke Bullet] at the ground immediately in front of them, obscuring Zau and those two clones. Zau created a tenth clone, and immediately after, used Henge no Jutsu [Transformation Technique] to transform his own body into a Fuuma Shuriken. The newly created clone took advantage of the smoke cover to throw the transformed Zau through the cloud of smoke.

Zau felt his stomach turn as he flew through the air, but he held onto his composure. He had been thrown through the smoke cloud, roughly in the direction of the clones, but the attacking clone had intentionally thrown slightly wide, so that the Fuuma Shuriken wasn't a major threat to any of the approaching clones-only slightly, however.. Zau wasn't intending to attack with his transformation-but at the same time, he didn't want it too obvious.

The clones he had left behind charged ahead to meet Vivian's head on, each pulling out a kunai as they ran out. They kept careful attention on Vivian's hands-he knew from previous fights with her that most of the threat with this fighting style came from the fingertips-if his clones could avoid the fingers, they'd be mostly safe. To that end, each slacked their muscles, twisting just slightly out of the way as the Vivians attacked, each employing Geigeki Ken to assist in their own movements. They notably did not fight back beyond token resistance-instead, they'd only take effort to avoid hits, only striking against the opposing clone's strikes if it was necessary to avoid a hit-the kunai was mostly for intimidation. Vivian knew Zau couldn't hit hard enough to take one of her clones out, but a kunai might change the situation.

Of course, in a direct fight, Zau was ever so slightly slower than Vivian, and weaker too. As such, Zau had to make this fight considerably less direct than usual.

Vivian knew from her own clones that using effects that required chakra wouldn't carry over to her clones unless she paid for all of them, a feat that would make her run out faster than she could say "I surrender". Carrying that logic over she was fairly certain at no point were Zau's clones going to be using Sharingan unless it was at a critical juncture. She had no way to confirm it but she suspected that with such a powerful doujutsu at his disposal it might become something of a crutch. His own natural ability to perceive events as they unfolded around him was perhaps weaker than her own, or so the logic went. It was still a shot in the dark but this skirmish would confirm it for her. She had seen how his fighting style would attempt to counter by reacting. For Zau using his Sharingan there was no doubt it was a powerful tool, but could his clones keep up?

The clones would continue their fight, pressing the attack without slowing. Bringing a knife to a fist fight, or a poke fight in her case, did somewhat even the scales. That being said the clones were confident they could evade incoming attacks if there even was time for a counter-attack. Moreover Zau would find that in his clone's attempts specifically to fight reactively they would have to perceive the now blurred strike of the Snake Hand, giving them even less time to react.

At this point it felt like they were both simply feeling each other out, testing the waters so to speak. Even the random-ass fuuma that Zau apparently got out of nowhere didn't come anywhere near her location. Had he perhaps learned a sealing fuuin in preparation for the exams, or was something else afoot? Whatever the cause might be The clones avoided the area where it had landed and fought on, charging the location of the three remaining clones if the ones they were currently fighting were defeated or keeping their focus on the elimination of those before them if not.

As the clones had all avoided the Zau-iken, the weapon simply continued to soar til it went into the trees. Once Zau was safely hidden, he broke his henge and leaped up into the upper branches, observing the fight between Vivian and his clones. He watched as each of his clones was broken, as many had simply stopped fighting so hard once Zau was hidden.

Of course, Zau was quite aware that he wasn't safe in the woods-it was only in her last match that Vivian blew up an entire section of the woods just to flush her opponent out. Zau created an additional Kage Bunshin, which made its way through the woods, winding its way around trees and over sticks and rocks to circle Vivian. It wasn't bothering to cover its noise-not that it was being exceptionally loud, but it wasn't being overly quiet either.

Zau, however, went the other way, and he would move far quieter than the clone had. Every now and then, the clone would create another shadow clone as it ran, and send the clone out towards Vivian. The attacking clones would all attempt to make it all the way towards Vivian, at which point they would unleash a flurry of blurred taijutsu-Zau doubted that this would actually work, but that wasn't the point.

Zau would keep going til he found what he was looking for-the stream. He lowered his body into the cool water, again, going as slowly as he could so as to not make too much noise. Once all of his body was submerged, Zau would turn around and lean against the shore, his hands held firmly in the clone seal. He would make a new clone every twenty seconds; these clones would run in alternating directions for a variant amount of time before leaving the cover of the trees and charging for Vivian, now from a different direction as Zau. Their tactic would be the same-overwhelm the original with Taijutsu, though, since they were now attacking from behind, these might have slightly more luck.

Zau still wasn't committing to a full scale attack just yet-his preparations were basically finished though, so now he could consider a more solid attack strategy. Next post, anyways.

OOC: Its been three days since Zau posted. Yadda yadda, Zau's actions are considered uninterrupted. Another skip will be counted as a loss for Vivian.

Against Zau's expectations, his clones actually managed to make it all the way to Vivian and strike her with several taijutsu. He hadn't been intending to land any crippling blows-but enough landed that he was at least fairly sure he was dealing with the real Vivian, not a clone. Zau switched the seal he held to Shunshin and dashed ahead out of the water, using Shunshin to rapidly cover half the ground he needed to.

Most of his clones vanished at that time, including the one in the trees; only 4 clones remained, thereby splitting Zau's chakra five ways. One of the clones would move to grapple with Vivian, attacking from behind while she was still engaged with the other clones. If successful, that clone would hold Vivian with a standing full nelson.

The other clones would hop backwards and, at once, unleash a Goukakyou no Jutsu from four directions simultaneously. Zau honestly hoped Vivian dodged this one-he wanted to win, but full body burns weren't exactly what he was going for here. Once the three clones launched their fireballs, they would each disperse, giving their remaining chakra back to Zau.

In any case, by then Zau had cleared the distance, and would be ready to fully engage-and so, he activated his Sharingan, that he might be able to keep track of Vivian's movements. Now that he had her in range, he wouldn't let her out if he had anything to say about it.

OOC:

Chakra Expenditure - Zau's total chakra = 453

32 Chakra spent in second round (Henge, Kemuridan x 2) - 421 Remaining

421 split 5 ways = 84 and change
Goukakyuu x 4 = 111 (37 from each)
Shunshin = 23
Sharingan = 46

At end of post: Only Zau prime remaining, with 241 chakra left

Well it seemed like the arrival of stray clones somehow managed to get under the guard of someone with highly trained hearing and a literal clone army that could do much the same. The blows she would take would hurt, but even as the physical damage was very real it would be mostly her pride that took the hit. It was time to end this.

With her now present in body and in mind she could execute her plan to make up for her earlier blunder. Hearing the clone coming up behind her she whirled around to meet him with a snake hand to block and strike at his throat. The second she saw any sort of movement coming up from her opponent blurred or otherwise she would instantly create another clone without slowing her own movement. The clone would take the hit and grab onto the Zau clone leading up to an easy follow up strike on Vivian's part before dispersing alongside the Zau clone.

Now she had a charging Zau that had shunshin'd at her plus a bunch of others that wanted to blow her up. Blowing people up was her job. This wouldn't do. Masking her movement Vivian crouched low as if to charge at the Zau running towards her as the Zau clones began their fire attack. Only she wasn't really running at Zau, it was obvious she wouldn't have time to make it just by running but would seem like she was trying the best she could regardless. In reality she used that moment as the fireballs flew her way to mask her sealless Shunshin back behind her group of clones. Now hidden from view it would appear as if the one they had been attacking had been a clone all along as it would simply disappear without a trace.

With there being only the one Zau left remaining the clones would begin to murmur among themselves at the sight of his sharingan. So he had finally decided to bring it out. Charging forwards they would put that fabled doujutsu to the test. Meanwhile Vivian charged with them at the rear of the pack where she couldn't be seen, quickly flipping through a set of handseals and staying out of sight alongside one other clone.

As the flames cleared it would become evident even without Sharingan that Zau needed to adjust his strategy slightly again. Before, he had charged out of the water preemptively because he hadn't expected his clones to connect with their taijutsu, and was hoping to press the advantage. He hadn't counted on the possibility of that Vivian being a clone, however. Vivian DID say that her clones were a lot tougher now...maybe...no. I don't care how strong she's made them, there's no way she took all that abuse as a clone and then fell to the flames. She doesn't need a seal for Shunshin, as I recall. That has to be it. So then...she's with the clones.

"Your shunshin's pretty good, Vivian. But you can't fool these eyes. Hide with your clones all you like, it's not going to help." Sure, it was mostly a bluff-Zau had a hunch that Vivian was with her clones, but he couldn't actually pick out which was her right now. He knew, however, that there would be some indicator, if he got a glimpse-Vivian took hits. She would have marks, and her clones wouldn't. With her hiding in the crowd though, he couldn't pick out exactly which was which.

So, back to the original plan A.

Zau spun on his heel, expelling a thick mist out of his mouth-Kasumi Enbu, like his other Katon techniques, had been trained to be sealless-which was a good thing, because unlike most Katon jutsu, Kasumi Enbu's nature was not immediately apparent. Being sealless made it less likely for Vivian to correctly guess its nature. As he spun, he did, however, perform a different set of seals-a set Vivian would recognize, if he had given her the chance to see them. Zau finished his spin and raised his fists, preparing to fight in the middle of his dangerous mist as the clones closed the distance. Of course, if they made the mistake of entering his mist, his fists were the least they'd have to worry about.

So Zau had figured it out. Or he was guessing and was hoping for validation for his theory. Either way it hardly mattered, she wasn't burnt to a crisp at the end of the day. Zau was spinning like a beyblade spewing smoke and shit, and the clones would close in on him regardless. Then they would attempt to poke the shit out of him.

Meanwhile the main body would hang back well out of the mist with two of her clones at her side. They would be dispersed and then reformed to match her bruised body on the off chance this next move didn't finish Zau, and would also mimic the seals on the off chance he was actually somehow behind her getting ready to stab her in the back and she missed it like she missed it earlier. If there was any doubt about her being serious before this would quash those thoughts.

As Zau would find himself fighting the clones within the mist Vivian would follow up only once one of the clones was defeated. Admittedly that might take awhile with how durable they were but she wanted a solid hit on this. Meanwhile the clones were absolutely not waiting for her backup but were aiming to take down Zau without the need for outside interference. Using their durable bodies and taijutsu to its fullest the clones would strike out and even utilize Vivian's favorite strategy of making secondary clones on the fly to block and grab strikes mid-flow.

Meanwhile with Vivian prime she was waiting for that first clone to fall. Using its downfall and her own hearing to pinpoint Zau's location she would enhance her clones cqc by grabbing Zau's legs with Chika no Ne and holding him still, which would allow her clones to pile on and grab his arms to hold him steady and smack him around.

Vivian didn't enter the mist. Not like I expected her to walk into my trap and hand me a win...but oh well. As the clones closed the distance, Zau launched a small fireball from his mouth with Katon: Kemuridan. Ordinarily, on impact, the fireball would burst apart and create a smoke cloud. This time, however, as soon as Zau launched the projectile, it would ignite his mist, incinerating all of Vivian's clones that had approached, and, to the layman's eye, also incinerating Zau.

However, he had planned for this since before he even turned himself into a shuriken.

As soon as the ball was launched, Zau initiated his Kawarimi, switching places with one of the large rocks strewn about the arena-specifically, he aimed for one behind Vivian, taking advantage of the sudden wave of flame to obscure her vision and interfere with her senses. Of course, for a split second, Zau had still been inside those flames before he got a chance to switch-so he should have been roasted.

Thankfully, Zau was still soaked from his little dip in the stream from a few moments ago. While the flames had definitely been hot and uncomfortable, that layer of moisture would have the effect of saving Zau from the worst of it, just as he had planned.

Wasting no time, Zau held his hands in the Shunshin seal as soon as he landed from Kawarimi, and used the ongoing distraction of the cloud of flame to-hopefully-keep Vivian's attention as he closed the distance, landing behind her and her clones. When he landed, he didn't bother with Taijutsu-he couldn't waste time individually attacking single targets. Instead, he pumped both arms outward and at a slightly spread angle to each other, aiming to catch all three of the Vivians who had stayed outside of the mist with a pair of his Fuuton: Kazete [Wind Release: Wind Palm], a technique Zau developed after being inspired by Vivian's own summoning. The pressure from Wind Palm could push human-sized targets a full 10 meters on a successful strike-and since the arena was only 100 feet, that would surely be enough of a push to launch Vivian and her clones far enough to fall into the flames left by Kasumi Enbu.

OOC:
Chakra update -

Starting at 241; 2 Posts of Sharingan Maintenance (16), 1 Kasumi Enbu (32), 1 Kawarimi (4), 1 Shunshin (23), 2 Kazete (56), 1 Kemuridan (14)

As the explosion engulfed her clones and, seemingly, Zau as well Vivian was left momentarily speechless. There was a part of her that was certain Zau had planned for this from the start and that it stood to reason he had a way out, but to say she was concerned was an understatement. Lighting everything up was supposed to be her thing, so she knew everything was under control and didn't have to worry about people who weren't supposed to explode going up in flame.

So distracted was she by the fire and her concern that Zau's attack from there rear, the very thing she had been preparing herself for, almost went off without a hitch. Almost. For while Zau did indeed manage to shunshin forward and land his attack there was one very important thing that hadn't happened earlier. Vivian had been planning on slapping some roots on his ass, and she never got the go ahead from her alert system. So while the chakra was all molded and ready to fire there hadn't been a target. Until now that is.

Releasing the tendrils of roots they erupted from all around Zau even as she flew through the air and towards the area where flames licked the earth dying it a crimson hue. With the sudden influx of chakra from all the clones that had just been defeated she had plenty to spare in making more. So many more in fact that they acted as a living carpet and shield from the fire. Flipping herself around the genin would rapidly shunshin out of the area using her clones as her "ground" and with her trained jutsu would be able to more than cover the distance Zau's jutsu had launched her, but she wasn't going right back in. Not yet.

Not even needing to draw blood from the fairly decent beating she had already taken this fight she simply went right to the handseals and summon of her friend and ally Heinlein. Her shunshin would have taken her to the side at an angle, maintaining a solid distance from Zau but still within range of another shunshin on her part. Only that's not what she chose to do, instead running towards his location and signalling Heinlein forwards. The two would close the gap together from different angles aiming to flank Zau who was, hopefully, still trapped by the roots that were aiming to drag him down to his knees as all of this went on. Heinlein was ready with his Chiton to throw Zau around as needed and Vivian was ready to go in to get close and personal after all of this keep-away. Her attacks were aimed mainly at Zau's shoulders much like in her first fight, aiming to remove his ability to use his arms and seal the match.

Chakra
Shunshin * 2 = 24 (1 was used in earlier post)
Chika no Ne = 60
Heinlein = 64
Remaining = 337 of 485

Well. To say that Zau was in a bit of a sticky situation was an understatement. Zau didn't know Vivian could use Wood Release-so right off the bat, that was an issue he'd have to deal with on the fly. On top of that, he was now dealing with a pair of opponents, rather than just Vivian-and the newcomer, Zau knew, could do the trick Zau had used on Vivian, only better, and in the opposite direction as well. On top of that, Vivian still had most of her chakra intact, since she had been relying mostly on clones the whole fight.

Pinned, flanked, outnumbered, outgunned, physically weaker and slower than his opponent, a less varied skillset, and considerably less energy-all of these things were true of Zau in this moment. A lesser man may have surrendered right there. Hell-Zau even considered it himself for half a second. Only half though. Because for all of those things Zau definitely was right now, there was one condition that still didn't apply to him-beat.

Zau couldn't break through those roots on his own. He also couldn't afford to create a clone to do it for him. Lastly, he really couldn't deal with Heinlein and Vivian together-Heinlein, on his own, was a huge advantage for Vivian. Zau would have to do this the risky, blunt, and horrifically stupid way.

He let Vivian close the distance. He raised his arms, as if he meant to defend himself. He kept his eyes trained on her as she got within striking distance; he watched her arms raise to assault Zau's own body. It was then that he struck. Zau spit that fireball from earlier, the weak one whose only purpose was to create smoke (Katon: Kemuridan). He spit it straight at Vivian's body, in point blank range. As it struck, it would create a burst of smoke, hiding his actions from Heinlein and Vivian. Once the smoke landed, Zau would deactivate Sharingan-he didn't need it anymore.

Zau engaged Geigeki Ken, increasing his speed and agility beyond what Vivian had been dealing with the entire fight. He relied on the last thing his Sharingan saw before the smoke took over-his eyes memorized Vivian's exact position, and had projected her movements for him. Zau struck forward, aiming for what would have been Vivian's center mass-complete with a Rasenha swirling in the palm of his hand. He utilized Massugu Dageki to further increase the speed of the blow, as that taijutsu, as with all his other techniques, had been mastered to the point where the strike was blurred. Geigeki Ken was a style focused on intercepting a strike, defending with offense. Due to the timing Zau relied on, there was almost no way that Vivian's own strikes were not landing-his arms would be essentially useless after this attack. However, with the speed Zau was capable of, it was entirely probable that his own attack would land at the same time-possibly even before Viv's. Zau's arms would be useless, that much would be true-but Vivian may be down for the count regardless. Zau sincerely hoped so, anyways.

Chakra
Starting - 98
Sharingan Maintenance - 8
Kemuridan - 14
Rasenha - 30
Total at the end of post - 46

The moment Zau launched his smoke attack Vivian felt a tinge of concern. The last time he had done this (that she knew of anyway) he had pretend pulled out a fuuma. The knee-jerk reaction would have been to make a clone between the two of them that very instant and have it absorb whatever damage was about to come her way, but her own momentum and the distance between the two would be working against her. Perhaps she could shunshin out of whatever was coming her way, but even without seals there was a charge up that had to be considered and she had not been preparing it prior to her charge.

Overall that left her options fairly limited. She had seen what his Rasengan could do to people close up on their mission together, and while she wasn't sure he had enough chakra left for one of those she didn't fancy finding out. One of the nice things about the Snake Hand technique is that it is equally effective used as a strike or as a block, and moreover she had faith in Heinlein to follow up where she left off. Twisting to the side at the last moment and changing her strike into a block Vivian aimed to mitigate any damage aimed at her main body with her own arms, although admittedly the ideal situation would be to get her whole body out of the way before Zau could strike. Logically she'd have the advantage as the smoke would eliminate Zau's predictive vision, his biggest edge. However...

It really wouldn't be enough. The speed of Vivian's block may be ever so slightly faster than Zau's attack but the timing and position of the two combatants didn't really allow for much maneuvering. While her dodge to the side and follow-up block would save her from the worst of the damage the fact of the matter was that Zau wasn't making a simple unarmed strike. The force from his Rasenha would for the second time this fight see Vivian lifted off her feet and sent flying away.

However Heinlein wasn't just standing around as all of this went down. As Vivian shifted from offense to defense he would do the reverse and bring his Shakujo to bear. He would strike with the tip through the smoke at where Zau's abdomen would be, counting on the fact that as far as he was aware the genin still could not move from that spot. Following up on that he'd pull the weapon back and strike out at where Zau's head would be with the pole. Vivian for her part groaned as she struggled to lift herself from where the strike had deposited her. She had no way of knowing for sure but was fairly certain at least one of her arms had been broken. Drawing a kunai with her remaining good arm she would limp off to the side while the smoke still gave her some sort of cover in case this wasn't over yet. Meanwhile the tendrils around Zau's legs would constrict menacingly, not enough to crush them but enough to send a message loud and clear.

Zau felt his technique connect, but didn't have any time to celebrate the fact as Heinlein's weapon drove the breath pierced his gut. Zau turned his head towards his attacker, his expression one of rage and pain, and moved his arm rapidly up in a blurred Ude [Block] as the staff passed through the thinning smoke. Zau would catch the Shakujo in his blocking hand, and as the smoke cleared, Zau glared in Heinlein's direction, exuding his Sakki [Killing Intent]. Ordinarily, the effect on Heinlein wouldn't be as tremendous as that between, say, a Jounin employing this technique on Zau-but Zau had just been stabbed. Zau's rage was bubbling over, his killing intent was considerably more real than it would have been had he only been whacked in the stomach.

Of course, other than intimidation, there wasn't much Zau could do to Heinlein, but there was always the chance that the jutsu would subvert that tiny bit of logic. In any case, Zau would take advantage of any hesitation Heinlein felt as a result of the jutsu and do his best to rend the staff away from Heinlein. If successful, he would jam the shakujo's blade between the roots entangling him and apply as much pressure as possible, trying for everything he had to free himself from the jutsu entangling him-if he could get even one leg free, he knew he'd be able to get out-and he knew he needed to get out, given that Vivian had squeezed his legs with the technique. Zau would supplement his efforts with continually drawing his knees up with Shoushitsu [Rising Knee], using the force of his Taijutsu and the Shakujo against that of the ninjutsu Vivian was using.

If all of that let Zau pull his leg out even an inch or two-or, better yet, split one of the roots-the extra space would let him extract himself fully. Zau would collapse onto the roots-covered ground, then brace himself against the staff to pull himself back up. His legs felt like jelly-he was pretty sure the entirety of the limbs would be bruised as a result of those roots and Zau's efforts at extraction. His legs were side concerns next to the bleeding gash in his gut; he didn't think any vitals had been pierced, but getting stabbed in the stomach was never exactly a minor event. Zau painfully leveled the Shakujo at his opponents, pointed end leading-he wasn't exactly a skilled staff/spear fighter, but he'd seen Heinlein do it once or twice, and had seen Kazue wield her spears, all with his Sharingan. He remembered the movements, and while they felt awkward to him, he was at least able to adopt a passable stance, though it had to be one-handed, since the other was pressed against his wound.

He knew he was still at a disadvantage-Sakki was a minor thing, and if Heinlein had felt any kind of significant fear as a result, the effect wouldn't last. Once he came back to his senses, Zau would be in only a slightly improved situation-he was still outnumbered, still out-chakra'd, and he was pretty badly injured. On the plus side though, he now had a fancy stick.

"You know..." Zau found it difficult to not breathe hard between every few syllables; Sakki was a cheap jutsu, sure, but he was still running on fumes, closer to empty than he'd ever been in his life before, and again...stab wound. "If you give up now...I might...MIGHT...forgive the stabbing."

For a brief moment as Heinlein felt the intensity of Zau's glare infused by chakra as it was he felt his focus wavering. Enough so that Zau would be able to grab away the weapon at least momentarily. However Zau was not at a level of ability where the summon felt completely overwhelmed beyond any hope of recovery, and with his particular personality as well he was not one to go down unless he was physically incapable of going on. As such Zau might get a small amount of time to start freeing himself from the roots, but not particularly much of it before Heinlein's actions would interrupt him.

Heinlein being the veritable Jedi that he was would reach out with his hand and grab at the staff using his Chiton abilities as Zau would be mid-extraction process. Zau would no doubt still be able to free himself from the roots as Vivian wasn't exactly trying to use the jutsu to its full potential mainly so she doesn't potentially permanently injure her teammate, but he would find that the weapon at the very least would be out of his reach. Immediately following that the summon would also waylay any attempts at getting up or moving around in general by pushing or pulling Zau over at every turn.

While this struggle with Heinlein was going on Vivian wouldn't be standing idly by. She would form four clones of herself that would spread out and surround her opponent, which counting herself and her summon would have Zau hemmed in from 6 different directions. She may not have use of one of her arms and the rest of her may be bruised and beaten but she was in no way backing out after having come this far. Her clones would be armed with a kunai just as she was and would be ready to fire away at any sign of provocation.

"Counter-offer. You give up now and I forget about you trying to blow me up." Vivian grimaced as a wave of fresh pain washed over her even as she tried to grin. "That's kinda my job you know."

As Zau was continually being pushed and pulled quite unceremoniously on the floor, he got glimpses of multiple Vivians. Almost all of my chakra is gone, I have to use on arm to keep my guts from falling out, and she still makes a mini-army. I'm touched.

Getting pushed and pulled around by Heinlein wasn't exactly a fun experience, especially not with a stab wound to worry about. Zau waited til most of his limbs were on the floor at the same time before activating Ki Nobori, rooting himself in place against Heinlein's technique. "I've had quite enough of that, thank you." Zau once more glared in Heinlein's direction. "I'm becoming more and more convinced to give Roast Tengu a try, featherhead."

Zau looked around at all the Vivians present. "Six on one, huh? Well, that's hardly a fair fight. Go ahead and make a few more to even things up a bit." Zau started to chuckle at his own joke, but the pain in his gut cut his laugh short.

Jokes and bravado aside, Zau knew it was over. The amount of chakra left in his body at this point wouldn't have let him toss a fireball, and with Heinlein present, he couldn't use his taijutsu effectively either. Sharingan and clones were long behind him, having stopped being options when Zau was still wrapped up in the roots.

Still-there was something to be said for the fact that Vivian had to pull out Heinlein. Zau wasn't where he wanted to be yet-not quite. He knew now where he needed to work to beat her though, and would get to that later. For now though, it was time to sleep. Zau released his technique and fell forward, unconscious.

The exams were over-Vivian was the victor this year. The crowd erupted into a frenzied applause-this had been one of the better fights they'd seen in years. Not everyone agreed with the winner-the crowd was about half and half in their support of Vivian and Zau-but that wasn't really the point, and likely wouldn't mean anything in the end-it happened often enough that those who lost were still promoted, while those who won may not be. It was all in HOW they fought, not necessarily how successful they were at whatever they tried.

Medics flooded the field, three each attending to each of the fighters. Neither one was in great condition, after all-Zau had a stab wound, and internal bleeding all throughout his legs. Vivian had various burn marks, bruises and lacerations from the beating she took from the clones, and most profound of all, had several broken bones and her own collection of internal bleeding from the Rasenha. They would both need some time in the hospital. For now though, it was mostly an occasion for celebration-the Chuunin Exams were finished, and with no village attacks, Akuma appearances, or any other distraction. A successful year, all around.
