Ninja Ranks

When you get right down to it, a force of ninja is nothing more than a military force with special abilities. So, of course they would have ranks as well. Ranks typically dictate what you're capable of-specifically, every rank has certain ability caps they must adhere to:

Academy Student - Academy Students are not technically ninja yet, and are instead training to gain the right to be a ninja. Academy Students are usually no stronger than normal people their age, but have limited abilities and can reliably perform D-ranked jutsu, setting them slightly apart from their peers-but in an even fight, they will still typically be about level with civilians. This rank is optional for those who have RP'd on Naruto forums before, but mandatory for anyone else.

-Beginning Rank

Genin - Genin are the lowest ranking official ninja in any of their village's forces. Genin have enough chakra to reliably perform C-ranked techniques, and can now perform elemental techniques and genjutsu. The average Genin is also much stronger than their size would otherwise indicate, being easily able to match adults despite usually being only children. This is the normal beginning rank, though anyone could start as an Academy Student as well.

-Beginning Rank

Or

-Learned at least 3 Academy Student Basics
-Engaged in 1 RP thread that is not learning the Academy Student Basics or completing the Exit Exam
-Completed the Academy Student Exam

Chuunin - Chuunin are mid-ranking ninja, capable of reliably performing B-ranked techniques, and possess the intricate training required for more advanced concepts, such as Fuuinjutsu complicated Kinjutsu. The average Chuunin is usually considered the absolute peak of normal human ability-and again, that's only average, and they're tops in everything at once. The vast majority of ninja never manage to make it past Chuunin rank.

-Obtained and spent at least 15 Additional Ninja Points beyond the Base Genin Value.
-Learned at least 2 Genin Basics
-Competing in Chuunin Exams is not mandatory, but skillful performance in a Chuunin exam may yield extra benefits upon promotion to Chuunin.

Jounin - Jounin are high ranking ninja capable of reliably performing A-ranked techniques, and are capable of using some of the most complex jutsu and abilities out there. The average Jounin is supernaturally strong and fast, being clearly above an beyond what is possible for a normal human. Very few make it to Jounin, but those who do are acknowledged as being among the best and brightest.

-Obtained and spent at least 40 Additional Ninja Points beyond the Base Chuunin Value. The 15 points previously gained for promotion to Chuunin do not count towards this promotion.
-Has created and learned at least 1 Custom Jutsu
-Requires 2 Approvals from Moderators or Admins. Approval will NOT be given if the applicant has been a habitual rule-breaker.

Sei Jounin - Legendary Ninja, while not an official rank, are those noted as being far more powerful than even other Jounin. Legendary Ninja can perform such miraculous tasks as performing S-rank techniques with relative ease, and are forces to be feared even among ninja, to say nothing of their presence among civilians.

-Obtained and spent at least 70 Additional Ninja Points beyond the Base Jounin Value. The 15 points previously gained for promotion to Chuunin, as well as the 40 gained for promotion to Jounin, do not count towards this promotion.
-Has created and learned at least 3 Custom Jutsu
-Character has done something in-game that is far and beyond what is expected of Jounin; will be evaluated by staff. Multiple examples of "legend-worthy" events can be submitted
-Requires 2 Approvals from Moderators and Admins. Approval will NOT be given if the applicant has been a habitual rule-breaker. 1 Approval MUST come from an Admin

Rogue Ninja Ranks

Rogue Ninja are exactly as they sound-ninja who do not express loyalty to any one village. While Rogue Ninja are not expressly regarded as criminals, their lack of loyalty means no village will vouch for their use of ninja abilities, which tend to be destructive, meaning even well-intentioned rogues still usually end up on the wrong side of the law. Not being of a village, however, means that they are not given official ranks-instead, the villages found alternate ways of ranking these dangerous elements.

D-rank - D-ranked Rogue Ninja are comparable to Academy Students; they're typically no better than a normal citizen their size, but they've picked up some minor ninja skills. These ninja can reliably perform D-ranked techniques, but are otherwise quite average. Hidden Villages tend to ignore D-ranked Rogues, discounting even the most violent as just petty thugs. This rank is optional for those who have RP'd on a Naruto forum before, but mandatory for everyone else.

-Beginning Rank (Rogue)
OR
-Be an Academy Student and roleplay a defection from the village.

C-rank - C-ranked Rogue Ninja are on the same level as Genin, usually able to match adults despite typically being children, and if they happen to be adults, are notably strong and fast. As their name implies, these ninja are typically capable of performing C-ranked techniques with ease, and can now perform elemental ninjutsu and genjutsu. Hidden Villages now start to keep track of Rogue Ninja of this level, though do not typically devote resources to hunting these.

-Learned at least 3 Academy Student Basics (Rogue Ninja may learn them outside of classes if taught by another) OR Committed a crime of any rank against a village
-Engaged in 1 Spar
OR
-Be a Genin and roleplay a defection from your village

B-rank - B-ranked Rogue Ninja are comparable to Chuunin, and are usually considered to be the peak of human ability in every area at once. These ninja can reliably pull of B-ranked techniques, as well as complicated concepts like Fuuinjutsu or complicated Kinjutsu. Hidden Villages are typically wary of B-ranked Rogues, especially those who have committed criminal acts. Villages will sometimes hunt down B-ranked Rogues for any serious crimes committed.

-Obtained and spent at least 15 Additional Ninja Points beyond the Base C-rank Rogue Value.
-Learned at least 2 Genin Basics (basics do not need to be learned from a village ninja) OR Learned a Kinjutsu of at least C-rank
OR
-Be a Chuunin and roleplay a defection from your village

A-rank - A-ranked Rogue Ninja are equivalent to Jounin, and are quite powerful, being recognized as supernaturally gifted, well above the possible skill of a normal human. They are capable of performing A-ranked techniques, and can perform all but the most complicated concepts. Hidden Villages will typically track A-ranked Rogues, whether they're criminal or not-criminals, they seek to punish, non-criminals, to recruit. It is at this level a ninja is considered too powerful to be allowed to just roam.

-Obtained and spent at least 40 Additional Ninja Points beyond the Base B-rank Rogue Value. The 15 points previously gained for promotion to B-rank do not count towards this promotion.
-Has created and learned at least 1 Custom Jutsu OR Learned a Kinjutsu of at least B-rank (Cannot be a Kinjutsu used for prior rank-ups or a derivative of that Kinjutsu)
-Requires 2 Approvals from Moderators or Admins. Approval will NOT be given if the applicant has been a habitual rule-breaker.
OR
-Be a Jounin and roleplay a defection from your village

S-rank - S-ranked Rogue Ninja are some of the most feared forces that roam the land, typically capable of and willing to cause great destruction. S-ranked ninja are Legendary Ninja in their own right, capable of performing S-ranked techniques and pursuing the most advanced concepts there are. S-ranked Rogues are hunted relentlessly by villages, and are generally considered a top priority for that village, for even the ones who have committed no crime have abilities too dangerous to be allowed to continue on their own.

-Obtained and spent at least 70 Additional Ninja Points beyond the Base S-rank Rogue Value. The 15 points previously gained for promotion to B-rank, as well as the 40 gained for promotion to A-rank, do not count towards this promotion.
-Has created and learned at least 3 Custom Jutsu OR Learned a Kinjutsu of at least A-rank (Cannot be a Kinjutsu used for prior rank-ups, or a derivative of that Kinjutsu)
-Character has done something in-game that is far and beyond what is expected of A-ranked Rogue Ninja; will be evaluated by staff. Multiple examples of "legend-worthy" events can be submitted
-Requires 2 Approvals from Moderators and Admins. Approval will NOT be given if the applicant has been a habitual rule-breaker. 1 Approval MUST come from an Admin
OR
-Be a Legendary Ninja and roleplay a defection from your village

Special Ranks

ANBU - ANBU are considered the elite of their respective villages, and are typically reserved for missions considered too secret or too dangerous to be trusted to normal ninja of that rank. ANBU are often employed when a mission's success is vital-and, typically, when that mission needs to be accomplished with no witnesses or survivors. ANBU is also used for activities the village does not want to have associated to them-such as assassination or torture. As ANBU is directly controlled by the Kage, they are typically above certain laws that apply to other official ninja, though sufficient deviance is severely punished. Any ninja of Chuunin rank or higher may apply to become ANBU, though there are special requirements that are explained in greater detail below.

General Requirements-
-Chuunin in good standing with the village.
-Obtained and spent at least 15 Additional Ninja Points beyond the Base Chuunin Value.

ANBU Squad Member - ANBU Squad Members make up the bulk of ANBU forces. These are elite among their peers, called upon and controlled directly by their Kage to complete clandestine missions. Each member wears a mask and an identical uniform while performing ANBU duties, and, while it is usually known when someone is an ANBU member, their exact squad is typically kept secret, with only other members of that individual's squad knowing who is who. ANBU Squad Members face NO PENALTY for the use of Kinjutsu, so long as the Kinjutsu is not of the "morally reprehensible" variety. ANBU Squad members receive a Porcelain Mask and appropriate flak jacket upon induction into ANBU. This gear does not need to be purchased with Ninja Points.

-Automatic entry upon acceptance into ANBU. Gear is given for free

ANBU Squad Captain - ANBU Squad Captains are recognized as being above and beyond even their fellow ANBU members. Promotion to Captain is kept a secret, only known amongst the members of that individual's squad. Captains wear no identifying marks, their identity simply being known among those who they command. ANBU Squad Captains receive 1.5x the typical pay for completing an ANBU-related mission before any bonuses are applied, as do any ANBU Squad Members that are engaging on a mission with an RPC ANBU Squad Captain.

-ANBU Squad Member for 1 month OOC
-Completed 2 B-ranked ANBU-related missions with team (See Missions and Crimes Guide for additional details)
-Must satisfy conditions for promotion to Jounin, but does not necessarily need to BE a Jounin.
-CANNOT be Hunter-Nin or Black Ops

Hunter-Nin - A special branch of ANBU, Hunter-Nin are trained exclusively for hunting down and killing ninja from their own village who have gone Rogue. Upon killing these Rogues, Hunter-Nin are required to remove the Rogues head as proof of the death and destroy the other remains-this ensures no other entity can gain information about a village's techniques by studying a Rogue's body. Hunter-Nins, in addition to the standard pay for their missions, receive a Bounty for every head they bring back to their village after a role-played assassination, equal to a fourth the pay of a mission corresponding to the target's rank. Individual ANBU Missions may indicate a particularly high value target, whose bounty will be explicitly given in the mission details.

-ANBU Squad Member for 1 month OOC
-Completed 2 B-ranked ANBU-related missions (See Missions and Crimes Guide for additional details)
-Must demonstrate to Staff that the character is especially suited to tracking and assassinating targets
-CANNOT be Black Ops or ANBU Squad Captain

Black Ops - Black Operations ANBU are employed when secrecy is of the utmost importance, during operations that, should they be discovered, can easily lead to war. For this reason, Black Ops ANBU are typically trained in stealth, even moreso than standard ANBU. Black Ops ANBU are ordered instead by the Head of ANBU, rather than the Kage-their operations are typically so secret, no paper trail that could connect them to the Kage can be allowed to exist. In addition to standard pay from missions, Black Operations ANBU receive a monthly (OOC) salary equal to the pay of a mission corresponding to the operative's official rank.

-ANBU Squad Member for 1 month OOC
-Completed 2 B-ranked ANBU-related missions (See Missions and Crimes Guide for additional details)
-Must demonstrate to Staff that the character is especially suited to espionage and willing to engage in highly illegal activities
-CANNOT be Hunter-Nin or ANBU Squad Captain

ANBU Head - The ANBU Head is a Sei Jounin, known for his or her commitment to ANBU and loyalty to the village. ANBU Heads cannot have ever been Rogue Ninja. ANBU Heads, while most ANBU still report directly to the Kage, are considered the top ranking ANBU operative within the village. ANBU Heads are usually not permitted to perform any non-ANBU missions, with all of their focus being required on performing their duties and overseeing their ANBU. The ANBU Head retains the benefit of the ANBU Section they belonged to before, in addition to one more of their choice.

-Has been a member of ANBU for at least 1 Rank
-Has been a member of their village their entire life, or at least since they began ninja training.
-Must be a Sei Jounin
-2 Approvals are required, one of which must be from an Admin

Kage - Kage are the ultimate leaders of the entire village. The Kage is usually the most powerful member of said village, as their responsibilities typically involve protecting the entire village and fighting against forces the other members of the village cannot. While this is usually the case, it is not unheard of for the strongest member of a village to be passed for the position of Kage for various reasons. Kage can only be Sei Jounin, and are known for being above and beyond all others. Kage typically do not leave the village, except in extreme circumstances. Kage may use Kinjutsu without penalty, and may have 1 free Restricted Jutsu that doesn't count against their normal limit.

-Sei Jounin with strong commitment to the village
-Character has done something in-game that is far and beyond what is expected of even Sei Jounin; will be evaluated by staff. Multiple examples of "Kage-worthy" events can be submitted. Alternatively, a remarkable skill or focus towards protection can be used to substitute
-3 Approvals are required, one of which must be from an Admin
-There may only be one Kage. Promotion to Kage requires that the previous either stepped down or is deceased.

Kage's Hands - The Kage's Hands are a pair of ninja who are typically as powerful as the Kage. They perform actions requiring an official touch, or actions that would typically only be trusted to the most powerful, most loyal ninja in the village-they answer only to the Kage, and are directed by the Kage in assignment of their missions. These ninja are truly the most elite their village has to offer, easily capable of being Kage themselves, were their Kage to ever stand down. Kage's Hands may use Kinjutsu without penalty and may have 1 free Restricted Jutsu that doesn't count against their normal limit.

-Jounin with strong commitment to one's village
-Character has done something in-game that is far and beyond what is expected of Jounin; will be evaluated by staff. Multiple examples of "Kage's Hand-worthy" events can be submitted. Alternatively, a remarkable skill or focus towards protection can be used to substitute
-3 Approvals are required, one of which must be from an Admin. If the village possesses an RPC Kage, that Kage's owner may also offer an Approval, which will count as a non-Admin Approval.
